To help them catch fish, puffins have unique barbs on their pallet called denticles that help keep the fish in place while they continue to hunt for more. ![]() They also need to feed their young pufflings, who rely entirely on their parents for food. Puffins may only weigh in around 1lb, but these little carnivorous seabirds need to eat about 40 small fish per day to stay healthy. Puffins Have Specialized Beaks to Help Them Fish The rocky Maine coast is home to nearly 1500 breeding puffin pairs, with Machias Seal Island being among the best locations in Maine for seabird observation. The rest can be found among the rocky shores along the North Atlantic Ocean including areas of Greenland, eastern Canada, and as far south as Maine. Iceland is the chosen breeding ground for 60% of the world’s puffin population. Over Half of The Puffin Population Breeds in Iceland Both parents incubate the egg and feed the chick. During the breeding season their colorful bills become especially vivid. While puffins don’t mate for life like their penguin lookalikes, they are often monogamous with the same partner over their lifetime, sometimes 20 years! Every year, puffins return to the same nesting area and will recouple with their mate. Once the season is over, they shed their outer bills until the following year. Their signature vibrant orange beak and matching feet only appear in the spring during their mating season. However, you might be surprised to see a dull, grey-looking beak if you spot these little birds during the winter. ![]() The puffin’s bright orange bill is a well-known identifier of the species. The latter may indicate the chick's prospect of survival and recruitment to the population.Their Bills Change Color Throughout The Year The results suggest that puffins adjust their parental effort according to both their own body condition and the size of the chick. The mass gain of the foster chick during the first 5 days after switching was positively related to the body condition of foster parents and also positively related to the mass of the foster parents' own chick, but negatively related to the size of the foster chick. The mass of the foster chick was more important than the size of the parents' own chick in determining the desertion rate of chicks. Whether parents deserted their foster chick was also negatively related to the size of the foster chick. Parents which deserted their foster chick originally had a chick of their own that was smaller than that of those which did not desert their foster chick. During the first 5 days after chick switching 28% ( n = 55) of the parents deserted their foster chick. Among unmanipulated birds mass gain (5–20 days) and mass of 20-day-old chicks was positively correlated with the body condition of parents at day 6. Appearance: The Atlantic puffin has a black body with a white belly. We examined the adjustment of parental effort of puffins by switching 20-day-old chicks randomly between parents of known body condition. Location: North Atlantic shorelines, moves as far south as Morocco and New York in the winter.
